Our Family Tree

Welcome to Our Side of the Mountain!

We're a family of 4, living in the boonies of rural western Maine. "Our" mountain is just over 1000 feet high, covered with spruce, cedar, oak, maple, and birch trees, granite boulders and spongy, green moss. Blue jays, Chickadees and hawks fly over head, calling loudly into the wind. Deer and raccoons leave their footprints in the soft, damp forest floor. Slow moving streams flow down and around the mountain. A small brook meanders past our property into the wetland and pond behind our home. Spring Peepers, Wood Frogs, Pickerels, and Bull Frogs croak out their songs. Wild flowers and weeds sprout up out of the forest, along the sides of our dirt road and even in the pond. It's a quiet, natural place and we love it! This blog is a peak into our life. Enjoy reading!

We LOVE animals!

And we have a bunch of them.

Our Golden Retriever Rosie is 7-years-old. We purchased her soon after we moved into our home as an 8-week-old puppy from a local breeder. She LOVES going on walks with us and sleeping on the couch.

Our cat Stripe is 3-years-old. She came to us as a "road side find" one SUPER hot August day. My daughter and her friends saw 2 kittens on the side of the road. They were there all day. The kids found a home for the orange one, but Stripe found her way here. Her Mom and Dad were probably feral cats...and the night the kids brought her home she was near death from dehydration and fleas and about 2-3 weeks old. I nursed her back to health and she became a permanent member of the family. She's fiesty and has taken over Sugar Maple unicorn Pillow Pet and Balsam Fir's dinosaur tent.

Fish! We have a 55 gallon tropical fish tank and Balsam Fir has a female beta in his bedroom named, well, "Fish"! LOL And now a 29 gallon that he's filling with fish as he reads books; he gets one fish for one book.

There's our flock of 6 spoiled hens - Onyx, Speckles, Rhodie, Roadrunner, Mustard, and Sassy. They feel right at home...INSIDE the house! But they do prefer scratching and pecking in the leaves in the woods and having a GENTLE swing with Balsam Fir. (Yes! They fall asleep while swinging! LOL) They are especially fond of my homemade bread!

Opal and Olive are our snowy white Pekin ducks who are QUITE attached to each other and "chatter" back-and-forth.

And not pictured is Annabelle, Sugar Maple's Teddy Bear hamster.
